What Should I Know About Cellulite?
The term "Cellulite" was first used in the 1920 and began appearing in English language publications in the late 1960. Cellulite is a topographic change in the skin which occurs "Like a swift migrating fish this word has suddenly crossed the Atlantic. Its existence as a real disorder has been questioned, and the prevailing medical opinion is that it is merely the "normal condition of many women and some men". It presents as a change of skin topography evident by skin dimpling and nodularity that occurs mainly on the pelvic region, lower limbs, and abdomen and is caused by the herniation of subcutaneous fat within fibrous connective tissue, leading to a padded or orange peel like appearance.
Cellulite can be caused by different factors. Hormones likely play a role in its development. Many believe thyroid hormones, estrogen, noradrenaline, insulin, and prolactin are part of the cellulite production process. Your genes may play a part in whether or not you would have cellulite. People who eat too much fat, carbohydrates, or salt and to little fiber are likely to have greater amounts of cellulite. It may be more prevalent in smokers, those who do not exercise, and those who sit or stand in one position for long periods of time. Tight elastic underwear limiting blood flow may contribute to the formation of cellulite. Cellulite may be more visible than fat deeper in the body. Even thin people can have it, because we all have layers of fat just below the surface of the skin. Collagen fibers that connect fat to the skin may stretch, break down, or pull tight, allowing the fat cells to bulge out. This creates the rippled look of cellulite.
You can check to see if you have cellulite by pinching the skin around your upper thigh. If it looks a bit lumpy, you probably have it. And if you do have it, you're definitely not alone: Most girls and women have cellulite. 85-90% of the ladies in post pubertal age have it. It's nothing dangerous and some doctors have the opinion that it is merely the "normal condition of the skin of many women and some men". Cellulite is fat - there's no getting around this and If you decide that you want to try to reduce the amount of cellulite you have, the best thing to do is to decrease excess body fat. If you think and your doctor agrees that you are overweight, eat fewer calories and exercise more. It's more a psychological issue - Cellulite causes many image problems and many women don't dare to wear short skirts or shorts because of it. So if you don't feel comfortable in your body you can completely remove it. Experts agree that an exercise routine that combines aerobic exercise with strength training is the best weapon against cellulite. In the meantime, if you want to conceal your cellulite, try using a self-tanning product. Cellulite tends to be a little bit less noticeable on darker skin.
Tips for avoiding cellulite include:
Staying hydrated with plenty of fluids
Eating a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and fiber
Exercising regularly to keep muscles toned and bones strong
Not smoking
