What Is Acne Caused By?Acne is caused by many different factors. All types of it develop when pores in our skin become clogged...
Sebum glands are stmulated by male hormons from the adrenal glands of both sexes around puberty. Our bodies make more sebum when our hormones surge and that's why teenagers have acne so often and women breakout before their periods. Sebum is a substance which main purpose is to lubricate and protect the skin, but under certain circumstances, cells that are close to the surface of the skin block the openings of sebaceous glands and cause a buildup of oil underneath (that's why cleaning your skin regularly can help). This oil stimulates bacterias, that everyone has on his/her skin, and they start to multiply and to infect surrounding tissues. Immersed in excess oil, the bacterias rapidly increase in number and multiply in the clogged pore, which becomes inflamed. Inflammation is what causes a pimple to look red, hot, and swollen. Inflammation near the skin's surface forms a pustule, deeper inflammation results in a papule (pimple).
When inflammation reaches deep into the skin, an acne cyst is formed. This is the most severe type of acne. Cysts can be really painful. People often see permanent scarring after this type of acne is healed. If the oil breaks though to the surface, the result is a "whitehead." If the oil accumulates melanin pigment, or becomes oxidized, the oil changes from white to black, and the result is a "blackhead." Blackheads are therefore not dirt, and do not reflect poor hygiene.
